Session 3, the late summer session has DSSG members swinging through
Army and Air Force installations and defense industry facility tours on
the West Coast and Midwest. Members fly via military air (an Air Force
KC-135). Throughout the excursions to the field, the members are
encouraged to interact with their hosts at all the facilities and bases.
In 2008, the 9-day trip began with a visit to Wright-Patterson AFB in
Dayton, OH, where members toured Air Force Research Laboratories and Air
Force Museum. Next they traveled to Offutt AFB in Nebraska for a visit
to U.S. Strategic Command's Joint Intelligence Center and Targeting
Center. Then to Colorado Springs, Colorado for a visit with North
American Aerospace Defense Command and United States Northern Command.
This session also included a visit to Palmdale, CA to visit Lockheed
Martin, Northrop Grumman and Edwards AFB. The group was able to get up
close and personal with cutting-edge systems such as the CV-22, the
Joint Strike Fighter, the Airborne Laser, the B-2 Stealth Bomber, Global
Hawk and the F-22. Session 3 concluded at Boeing in Seattle, WA, to
view the F-22 Composite Factory and get a glimpse of the new
787-Dreamliner.
