Session 3, the late summer session has DSSG members swinging through
Army and Air Force installations and defense industry facility tours on
the West Coast and Midwest. Members fly via military air (an Air Force
KC-135) and witness a refueling with a C-5. Throughout the excursions
to the field, the members are encouraged to interact with their hosts at
all the facilities and bases.
In 2006, the 9-day trip began with a visit to Boeing in Seattle, WA, to
view the F-22 Composite Factory and get a glimpse of the new
787-Dreamliner. In addition, they visited with the Stryker Armored
Vehicle Battalion at Ft. Lewis, Washington. Next they traveled to
Palmdale, CA to visit Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Edwards AFB.
The group was able to get up close and personal with cutting-edge
systems such as the CV-22, the Joint Strike Fighter, the Airborne Laser,
the B-2 Stealth Bomber, Global Hawk and the F-22. This Session also
included a visit to U.S. Strategic Command's Joint Intelligence Center
and Targeting Center at Offutt AFB in Nebraska. Session 3 concluded at
Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, OH, where members toured Air Force
Research Laboratories and Air Force Museum and saw the IMAX movie,
Fighter Pilot.
