DSSG Sample Activities - Session 2

Session 2 represents the first foray into "the field" for members. The DSSG Members visit Navy, Marine and Army bases on the East Coast. Members fly via Military Air (an Air Force KC-135), and, as with all excursions in the field, are encouraged to interact with their hosts.

While visiting Norfolk Naval Station, members were briefed by senior military officials from the Navy's Atlantic Fleet and The Joint Forces Command. They also toured an Amphibious Assault Ship, AEGIS-equipped destroyer, and a tactical submarine.

The Marines at Camp Lejeune led DSSG on tours of their Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) training facility. Members also went on an assault craft vehicle ride and were able to sit behind the controls of the MV-22 simulator.

While at the Army's Fort Bragg, members toured the medical facility and communications room. They also met with soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division and U.S. Army Special Operations Command.

The DSSG leaves North Carolina and heads to MacDill AFB in Florida, where they are briefed by senior flag officers from U.S. Special Operations Command and U.S. Central Command. These briefings include presentations on current operations; force structure, resources, requirements and strategic assessments; intelligence and information; operations, plans and policy; and acquisition and logistics.

Session 2 concludes at Kings Bay Submarine Base in Georgia, where members receive a command brief and tour of a TRIDENT nuclear submarine.
